Simply because they withheld help for Gideon in the battle...at a " crucial time " ... the Lord allowed all the men of the city to be slain after the victory was won.

We are in the last of the last days. That means the heat has been turned up and the intensity will do nothing but continually increase. Getting in the battle and fighting the battles for the Lord is truly more important than it has ever been.
The personal stakes are much higher and the rewards much greater.
